The film takes place in German-occupied provincial Poland during the summer of Romek Filip Piotrowicz and Guido Jonas Nay are both seventeen years old, but their circumstances could not be more different.
Romek is a Polish railway worker, Guido a German military policeman. Both are attracted to Franka Urszula Bogucka , the pretty daughter of a local farmer.
She seems to prefer Guido, who makes the most of his limited opportunities for courting her. He barges in on her and Romek while they are listening to popular music, even changing the record to swing so that he and Franka can dance.
Most of the other men are far older and more experienced than he. Although Guido has something of a mentor in Odi Gerdy Zint , the older man is far from a model soldier.
To make matters worse, their troupe falls under the command of a heartless and by-the-book Oberleutnant Steffen Scheumann.
He forces Guido to make brutal choices that may change him forever. Early in Summer Solstice , Rogalski hints at the deportations to concentration camps.
He does this by showing troves of valuables, presumably taken from Jews in transit, and also through key bits of dialogue.
